My name is Brian Tvedt. I am running for the Syosset Board of Education because I believe Syosset is in a challenging period, in which we have the opportunity to chart a new and exciting future for the children of our community, but only if we firmly tackle the issues in front of us.

AI

No student’s grade, placement, or disciplinary record should be determined by an algorithm. I will push for an updated, comprehensive AI policy that ensures no student is left behind, supports teachers in using AI effectively while establishing firm boundaries, and requires human review of all consequential student decisions.

Budget

The $140 million bond measure passed in 2024 did not resolve issues around our long-term financial sustainability. I will advocate for a transparent 10-year financial plan tied to real enrollment and cost projections, published before the next budget cycle. Syosset families deserve to see the numbers, not just reassurances.

Protection for ALL students

Every bias incident in our schools should follow the same documented procedure, with the same transparency and follow-through regardless of who is targeted. I will push for the district to adopt and publicize a bias incident response protocol, with clear guidelines regarding when details of individual cases should be communicated to the community. The district should report aggregate data on an annual basis broken down by type of bias, thereby ensuring that no group of students is made to feel that their safety and belonging matter less than anyone else's.

I have lived in the Syosset school district for twenty years and have three children who have all gone through the district with my youngest currently in 12th grade. I work in the areas of software development and quantitative finance, where I have acquired considerable experience in solving complex problems in collaboration with others. I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.
